It's Monday. The meetings have started, the inbox is filling up, and the pressure of the week is already beginning to build. But your lunch break still belongs to you.
Instead of spending all of it scrolling through social media or continuing to think about work, use a few minutes to prepare your mind for something waiting for you at home: your 15 minutes with art.
You don't need your canvas at work. You don't need your brushes. You don't even need to draw. You are simply preparing your mood to create later.
Use Your Break to Find Inspiration
During your breakfast or lunch break, take a few minutes and look at art. Search for Van Gogh. Matisse. Monet. Picasso. Or simply search for paintings that interest you.
Don't study them like you're preparing for an exam. Just look. Notice a color combination. Notice a simple shape. Notice the way Van Gogh moved his brush. Notice an unusual sky, a flower, a chair, a face, or a landscape.
Then ask yourself: what would I like to paint tonight?
Maybe you see one of Van Gogh's paintings and think, I love those blues and yellows. Maybe tonight I'll make something with those colors. Or perhaps you see a simple still life and think, tonight I'll paint one apple.
That's enough. You have planted the idea.
Give Your Mind Something to Look Forward To
I used this technique myself. Even while I was still at work, knowing that I had an idea waiting for me at home gave my mind a little space from the working day.
I might still have meetings to attend. Emails to answer. Problems to solve. But somewhere behind all of that was another thought: tonight, I'm going to paint.
I would start thinking about the colors I might use. The subject I wanted to paint. How I might simplify it. And strangely, even though I was still at work, that thought could give my mind a little peace.
More importantly, it gave me something to look forward to. I wasn't only going home after work. I was going to meet my canvas.
Then, When You Get Home...
Your idea is already waiting. You don't have to sit in front of a blank canvas wondering what to do, you've already thought about it during lunch.
Now give yourself just 15 minutes. Put the phone away. Pick up the brush. Let your eyes look. Let your mind engage. Let your hand create.
Work had these three heroes for most of the day. For the next 15 minutes, they belong to you.
And Something Begins to Change
At first, you may have to remind yourself: tonight I'm going to paint. But keep doing it. Tomorrow, find another painting during your break. Another color. Another idea. Another reason to meet your canvas when you get home.
After some time, something interesting can happen. You stop thinking, "I have to do my 15 minutes of art." And start thinking, "What am I going to paint tonight?"
That's when a small exercise begins becoming a routine. And with enough time, that routine can become something even more powerful: a passion.
Work may still take eight or nine hours of your day. But it doesn't have to own what comes after.
